Alt characters
#1
So I've been thinking lately of spending the 650 zen to get some character slots, and starting a new Fed toon from the beginning. I want to focus my attention a bit more, make them a Tactical character from the start--rather than my current Andorian Science character, who I leveled without really knowing what I was doing. (I know I could buy a retrain token too, but I'd like to do a tac character, of a different race).

But before spending the zen, I thought I'd ask: why do people use alts? I can see myself just not playing my Andorian anymore, and would hate for that investment of time to go to waste. I can only play a few hours a week, so to divide my time with one more character (knowing I have a Romulan on the way) might not be the best choice. The only solid benefit I can see of a new character is grinding, and getting to play through it again with a different angle.

Do, for those of you who have a few characters--is it worth it?

(I should mention that I've been converting dil to zen this weekend, and have made half of what I would need to buy the slots--so it's less a concern of dollars than time).

I have a Fed and KDF toon... and honestly, it's a pain to figure out which to play. If they would have made KDF available from level 1 when I started playing, I think I would only have 1 KDF toon with an available slot for Romulan, which I think will be my new main... depending on story line, ships and gear (don't think that will be an issue). Don't get me wrong, I love my KDF and have focused the last week on him. As far as REP goes, let me tell you, it's a HUGE pain in the @$$. I spend at least 2 hours a day on rep for both characters, so I can take advantage of the level XII gear... it's a real chore.

If you want to roll a Tac and this will be your only character, you will have a much more enjoyable experience than having to worry about 2 toons. One thing though, Are you sure you want to grind through the story line again? I couldn't do it... one time was enough. No sir, I'm going to wait for the new Romulan storyline to roll a new character... probably an Engineer.

With all that said and I hope it made sense, I'm going to go home today and spend 2 hours grinding REP to finish another bubble on both toons. Whatever YOU decide, because it's totally your decision, have fun doing it!!! This game is a blast and the most MMO fun I've had in years. The Fleet is awesome and very helpful, and I'm just happy to be a part of it.

This is the challenge I'm having. I love playing my FED because he's at level 50 and I get all the fun stuff (read: not the story missions). But I play my KDF more often because I enjoy leveling up. I think I'm mostly tired of my FED buy though because I didn't plan him out very well--right now he's kind of patched together, his skills are all over the place, and it doesn't suit my playing style--because I didn't know what that was when I started. The difference between him and my KDF toon are night and day--K'voQ is a pleasure to play because I'm playing efficiently. Alkut's lucky if he can survive the first shot to his shields in ground combat.
I wouldn't play through all the story missions--especially most of the Romulan War, which I didn't enjoy for the Feds--but would pick and choose. You level quickly enough that I could breeze through it, picking what I want, and concentrating on fleet actions and BOFFs for skill points.

Well, different classes can do different things.
This is the big difference for me, and the big plus. I went Science for my first toon because I like the "healer" role in D&D...but found I didn't like it so much in STO. I like the Photonic Fleet and Gravity Well, but other than that, I'd rather fill slots with engineering and tac powers. On the ground, Alkut feels useless with all his hyposprays--but I love that K'voQ can build shields, lay down mines, and bring in a drone.

I guess it almost comes down to what I'm doing with my Fed character--he doesn't fit my play style. That itself might be a good reason to get a different "main" character.

So far, I've run Tac on both Fed and KDF and on the ground they are both pretty much the same. Chuck a grenade and start the mayhem. However, my Science captain is a totally different story. She still starts things off, but she does it with a sniper shot and a debuff, then backs up while her away team dishes out the firepower. While they dish the pain, she works to keep them alive and adds a sniper shot where she can.

So far, that's been a very playable strategy. It also doesn't hurt that she's a liberated Borg and has those handy little stun skills in case something gets too close.

Ship-side, her skills look for weaknesses in the opposition or ways to disable or pacify the target so it can't fight beck efficiently.

Just a matter of adaptation to the role the character is molded in. Smile

Figure to be giving an Engineer a try once the Romulan update goes live.

I've got one of each role on each current faction, for 6 total. I'm a pretty fickle player, so I like the variety, and I get a chance to explore the game from different perspectives with each character. You get a better feel for the potential of each role in the game. On the other hand, it's a real pain to try to give each character attention, so I mostly abandon half the toons. This Crystal Catastrophe event is really stressing me out. Wink

+10000000000000000000 It has become a chore to make sure both my toons get a damn crystal... ugh.

Are you guys seriously considering making Fed/KDF alts when you can make Romulans in just over a month.

Not me sir... I'm having a time with 1 KDF / Fed. I will, however, roll a Romulan at launch, who will declare his loyalty to the Klingon Empire.... Smile

As it should be! My Rommie is likely to do the same.

I say we have leveling parties... I truly think the episodes would be tons more fun with a group.
