Classes, roles and ships

Well! That's fair enough. You can do hybrid builds. Should you do one? That's another matter.

Hybrid roles are more complicated, though, and require a deeper understanding of how it works together.

If someone is comfortable enough to ask "I'm looking at getting a cruiser for my science toon because it will allow me to do.................whatever. What do you think?" then that's great.

If someone literally just asks "what ship should I get next?" then I don't know if they understand the implications of what a different class of ship are.

Essentially, you wouldn't have someone guarding the IKS Kang in CSE unless they were ready for it, so why suggest that someone gets in to a relatively complicated way of playing before they are ready?

I may not be explaining myself well!

Mixing career and ships isn't a complicated way of playing, as a matter of fact it is exactly the same way. No matter what career or ship you choose, you need to determine the pros and cons of your setup then compensate for the cons and enhance the pros.

That's the most basic and standard rule. The career/ship combination has no bearing on that. Whenever someone asks me what ship to use I always say, well career X works well with ship X but anything you choose is fine. If you don't like something about ship X, then go for ship Y or Z.

A player won't be instantly better by sticking to the ship that matches their career. Look at the tac/escort combo. Those things fall apart so fast, and telling a tac to get into an escort just because they match won't make him go poof any slower. Actually it might make him go poof faster lol.

There is no reason not to. Perhaps the only reason could be PvP, but I'm not sure since I really don't do it. Although I believe in PvP it still doesn't matter.

Engineer in an escort, ship pumps dps while native engineer abilities pump survivability.

Also this is much much less clearcut if you get into the KDF side. Instead of escorts/cruisers/sci ships you have Raptors/cruisers/carriers/siege ships/semi-carriers/support ships/etc

It is harder from the names, but the boff layout is often a guide.
