Reputation Ability Points

I have managed to raise a few reputations to 6 and got a message telling me I have received 9 reputation ability points for that reputation but I have no idea what they are, what they are used for, or how to use them. Anyone have an idea?

All of your reputation abilities (accessible in the Traits panel of the Character Status window) will automatically be removed and replaced with an improved version ("Rank 2".)

You will then need to readd any reputation abilities to your active sets that were replaced this way.

The message about points is odd and I think is a relic of the way these worked in the past.
