The biggest problem is that moves like this eliminate any trust that we have in what they tell us. Over the last couple years they tell us that we'll be able to use the same currency year after year for the events and that we'll be able to earn the ships next year if we didn't get them done in time. This contradicts all of the things we were told in the past. I know that most people have already lost any semblance of trust from previous similar moves they have made but when you continualy break that trust time after time eventually even your most fervent supporters will abandon you.

There is no doubts that crAptic....
cryptic wants to force us to play this event. Now tell me, when you got a new Risian ship, how often did you play it? I got both ships escort and cruiser, I used those ships only a few times...
I rather focus on gathering EC to buy something really awesome. Jem Hadar dreadnought or Xindi Aquarius for example.

That's a solid point. The Risian ships are the only ships I haven't even leveled up yet since Delta Rising launched. they are neat to look at but are inferior. The corvette was the only escort to not get a 5th tac slot at T5U rendering it pretty useless.
I sense a lot of negativity here, I'm not so sure; perhaps I'm simply the eternal optimist.
First off - we don't know what kind of ship they're introducing. It might be awesome, and worth the grind. Players who have stacked the pearls are being rewarded with an alternative to the ship. New players and existing players can both gain this new ship on -roughly- the same playing field as each other.
Removing the Corvette and Luxury Cruiser is a shame for those - including me - who missed out on it previously. That in turn rewards those who were around and did make the effort/were able to put the time in.
It's clearly a bone of contention if you saved up pearls for the express purpose of buying the ships, but at least there's an outlet for them.. which offers some pretty good loot, tbh.
Given the effort of doing the pearls to the rewards it isn't much of a second-place prize to me. Based on the last seasonal events most of the loot or ships won't be used for me after a few weeks anyhow so the actual prize is not my issue; it is the way Cryptic treats the player base by constantly reminding us we are mules to be exploited for our labor.
Well looking at thing things that i have dug up in this thread, there is a very urgent and unfortunately good reason why they are so desperate for cash

While perusing my Twitter feed a while ago, I saw a tweet from @trekonlinegame with this link about event ships and the retiring of the Lohulnat (or however it's spelled) pearls. I found most of it to be the usual justification for the devs making poorly-received changes, but the last paragraph really stood out.
"We will be making every event ship you’ve ever earned and every event ship moving forward total account unlocks. As soon as one character on your account owns a ship, every single other character on your account that exists now or you will ever create will have immediate access to any event ship you’ve earned. There will be no need for your alts to play the event mission, no hoops to fly through other than picking up the ship from a store. Hopefully taking this extra step will address any lingering concerns you have with the overall change."
So it appears that all the past and future event ships that players earn will be account-wide unlocks from now on. That means current and new alts will be able to claim, without all that grinding, all the event ships you ever have and ever will earn. Hopefully this extends to anniversary ships as well. I'm just curious now as to whether or not this change will alleviate any of the anger people who have been hoarding pearls and Q-tographs are feeling. Personally, this might actually encourage me to grind for event ships since I'll only have to do it once on one toon to unlock it for all my others. Thoughts?

I have a feeling that entire game going in wrong direction. The further in future the less Trek content I see. Like Caitians, Risan ships, Intel ships, Command, Iconians... but the main reason why I think so is that they decided to take too big time line.
The only thing I hope that there will be new STO, because you can't save this one...
What do I think about the Risa event:
I Thought we explorers, not warriors, dancers
