New characters advice
#1
Okay so I was rather dissatisfied with my starting characters, so I decided to take this delta recruitment character thing as an opportunity to remake my main characters as something more in line with what I had in mind.

My ultimate objective was to cover as many different gameplay styles as possible with as few characters as possible, for each side.

My initial idea was to go KDF Tactical (BortasQu), FED Engineering (Odyssey), and RRF Science (Tulwar).

Then it's occurred to me that I failed to cover several bases...

-My MVAM is a favourite ship; most people would want to captain the Enterprise or something iconic, but the MVAM seems to appeal to my own tastes moreso than anything else. So that requires a FED Tactical.

-I've bought (but admittedly haven't used) a Varanus Support Ship. So that's a KDF Science? I was rather disappointed with its performance on its own but then again I wasn't playing with a group at the time, so...maybe things will look up for it. This, more than anything, I think I want some input on. Should I make a KDF Science character to be able to support a good KDF team should the need arise?

-I'd still need a carrier. I do have an Atrox, so that would work for a Federation Science character...

And now I have like five more characters than I originally intended.

At the end of it all, I have planned

FED Tactical (Prometheus, possibly Akira)
FED Engineering (Odyssey)
FED Science (Carrier?)

KDF Tactical (BortasQu or Bird of Prey?)
KDF Engineering (if the Tactical is flying a Bird of Prey, then this character would fly the BortasQu)
KDF Science (Varanus? Carrier?)

RRF Science (Fed; Tulwar)
RRF ???? (KDF; Carrier? D'Deridex?)

And then looking at that I have a need to balance everything out with an RRF Tactical.

Argh. I just need help with planning out these characters to get the most out of the game! Any advice?

I'm coming around to the idea that, especially at the end game, the ship type doesn't really have to match the career.

I have 6 chars, not including the bank slot char. A mix of kdf and fed, mainly tacs but with one science - but I end up loving the engineering play, to the extent that I rolled a fed engi as a delta toon.

I would say, play what you will enjoy playing. Regardless of ship type.

Agreed ship type and career don't matter. I successfully run a Fed Eng in escorts. As a matter of fact I prefer it because the Miracle Worker ability from Eng is a great way to survive in an escort

I'd also like to add that you can use different shipa with the same character thanks to the loadout feature on ships.

Speaking to the KDF Sci specifically, it isn't easy playing a sci in the KDF.  If you want to play a pure sci role you have precisely one option for ships.  It's a decent ship, but not on the level that you see in the fed.  There are of course options other than kdf specific ships at end game which helps.  If you don't need to have a pure sci ship, the Kar'fi is probably your best option.  It's a solid carrier and fun to use.  It still has a solid science layout, just doesn't give you the secondary deflector and sensor analysis.

I ran most of the story missions on my engineer main using escorts, because  cannons blow up those klingons faster than normal beams. Even now, I use my avenger as a "durable escort' with a v. high turn rate and DH cannons. You can use an eng character on the MVAS, which improves its originally weak engineering abilities.
