New player looking for help
#1
Hi guys I just started playing STO and I'm looking to buy the best ship I can on the game. At this point I'm looking for a well balance ship but mainly looking to deal massive DMG. Later on I will get in to the ship equipment but for now lets get started with the ship itself.

Hello Valsak and welcome to STO! There are many different ships to choose from, but first I'd have to ask are you playing as Federation or KDF? Romulan possibly?

I decided to go with the Federation to start with and to see were the story has gone after the TV series.

I have decided to go Tactical so far. The recomended ship is an Escort but there has to be a more balanced ship I can use without losing to much DPS

Ok, well I can see where you're coming from as I prefer the same. I am also a tactical officer. I have many ships from heavy escort carriers, cruisers, and 1 carrier. I'd go with the avenger when you're level 50, and when it comes to tier 6 ships you'll have the knowledge to decide on your own.

Ok thats nice to know I will look up the Avenger this is actually my second Tactical char I kind of mess up my last one.

On the other hand I'm still a bit lost in the game mechanics it has been a wile since the last time I play that's also why the new char. Do you have any starting tips I you can provide that may help me move smoothly through the game?

I would say not to worry too much about your choice of ship until you hit level 50 in game, as once you do that is likely a ship you will stick with for some time through the endgame content. Try out different kinds of ships and builds as you level to see what you enjoy and what works. In terms of best damage builds, there are probably two main schools here: broadside cruisers (using beams, and a subset using Dual Beams on an Avenger/Romulan Scimitar), or high spike damage (using cannons and a Dual Beam with massive crit damage). Lots of different stuff can work in endgame though for good damage providing you have the right gear for the build, and understand how to pilot.

As for starting tips, join our fleet if you haven't already and find some newer players to team up with. Teaming on missions makes life much easier.

Here's a simple tip: Fight, as much as you can.  Doing this will supply you with the muscle-memory and instincts needed to be good at the game.  Beyond that just experiment with ship hardware until you find the build that augments your play style.
