Most of our players will be well familiar with at least some C-store ships. But not all of our new folks will be. Thus this thread to help the newer players get the most out of their money if/when they decide to go ship shopping in the C-store. Nothing worse than buying a ship and then discovering you picked the wrong version of the ship for your character class.
I'll use the Vesta class for my example as it is the one I'm most familiar with. Those that use Odyssey, Andorian Escort, Bortasqu, and Scimitar class ships, please add to this with details on the set class you fly the most.
And yes I am working totally from memory today as I am having a slow day at work. So go on and laugh at me when I forget something. It's ok, I can take it.
I land squarely on the "Get the full set" concept. It's three ships for the cost of two and each ship has it's own console. In all of the sets, if you equip all of the consoles on to one ship from the set you get a bonus ship ability. In the case of the Vesta, it's a phaser lance that's pretty much identical to the one on the Dreadnought Cruiser.
Second reason for the full set is that you don't have to keep the ship all the time if you don't want to. C-store ships can be discharged and recovered at need. So on your Sci Captain, pop all the boxes and move the consoles to your Surveillance Vesta and discharge the other two. Now go to your Tac Captain and repeat the process with the Reconnaissance Vesta. Your Eng Captain gets the Strategic variant.
Visually speaking, you can mix and match the bits from all three ships to get a design that you like. Have fun with this as it will make zero difference in ship performance.
Each ship also come with a purple MkXII Aux DHC phaser cannon. I don't have to tell you that you will want to bring those together on to one ship! It is very possible and workable to do a pure energy weapons configuration on this ship and it will do the job admirably. I've done so with good success. However, I LIKE those Breen Transphasic torpedo toys so my standard configuration has the rapid fire torp up front and the cluster torp on the stern.
With the various deflector skills available, the Vesta makes a very good support craft for in close space melee with team mates. You have firepower strong enough to do damage and your fermion field will help with shield and hull regeneration. Plus if the team starts to get overwhelmed, kick off the repulsion field to move the bad guys off a bit.
In solo combat, I regularly fire off a Gravity Well, come about 180, engage the repulsion field, then fire off the cluster torp. This keeps irritants off your back, in your gravity well, and bunched up for the cluster torp to do rude things to.

The set consoles- Take note- Having all three equipped on your ship will also give you a phaser lance very similar to that of the Dreadnaught Cruiser
Console - Universal - Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver- Creates a regenerative field around your ship. Heals hull and shields for you and allies.
Console - Universal - Quantum Field Focus Controller-Creates an impenetrable Quantum shield around your ship. This is your "Escape Certain Death" shield.
Console - Universal - Multidimensional Wave-Function Analysis Module- Created a repulsion field around your ship that pushes enemies away and does kinetic damage.
