'Best' mods for crafted space weapons

There are some rare ones you can look for like Pen (ignores armor rating) or Ovr (adds beam overload) or Rpd for cannons.

I haven't been looking much at the r&d since the expansion.  Did they add the ability to select mods?  If so let me know how.  I'll be getting back to crafting eventually.

No, the mods you get are random. That's why people like are churning out hundreds of Mk II weapons, looking for [CrtD]x3s and dropping the rest at vendors or the Exchange.
