While the ship falls within Cryptic's "balance" doctrine it's different enough to be an experience all its own and has a great deal of synergy for a tactical captain. The special consoles are VERY useful and well thought out for their respective roles, without being OP.

I've clocked several hours in the platform, and would be very happy to answer questions.

I've purchased the Heavy Escort Carrier: Armitage Class and Tactical Escort Retrofit: Defiant. I really like the look and feel of both... I've considered Andorian, but I don't like the look. With the two classes I've mentioned, do you have any pros or cons in comparison? <make sense?>

Comparing both the HEC and TER on one side, and the Andorian on the other?

The HEC is a far more rounded platform, especially with the right fighters. You aren't loosing anything by flying an HEC. As for the TER, well, to me it's the second most iconic federation ship, second only to the Galaxy, so I'm partial to it. Wink The TER is a fine ship for it's level, and being a pure escort it's more than capable of filling it's role. If I were you I'd replace it with the fleet version when you can. It's a sight less "papery." (FYI, I have flown all 3-ships extensively, so the above isn't conjecture.)

As for the Andorian: Yeah, I'd guess its looks aren't for everyone, for me though it's very pleasing to look at, even without a saucer. :o I've been using 4 fleet DHC's and the wing cannon on the front, 2 matching beam arrays on the tail with all 3 consoles on the Kumari. It's hard to argue with that sort of firepower on approach. Smile Don't believe the press about it being frighteningly fragile. It's about as sturdy as any of the other escorts I've flown, but you have to work a bit to get it that way.

If you want you can easily stay with the HEC/TER. You won't be missing a thing.
Cannons, Torpedoes, Mines. I like having a cannon buff, Torpedo buff, Mine buff, energy type buff, and projectile type buff = 5 slots

For me 5 is perfect for an Escort type ship.

Fore:
3 Phaser type cannons up front (180 arc)
1 Omega Torpedo launcher (90 arc)
1 set of wing cannons also Phaser (45 arc)
Rear:
1 Cutting beam (360 arc)
Mk XII Plasma Mine launcher

1 Cannon type weapon console
2 Torpedo type weapon console
3 Mine type weapon console
4 Energy type console
5 Projectile type console

Hmmmm,

I think you might get much more 'bang for your buck' if you focused on:

Console - Tactical - Phaser Relay XI (blue) +28.1%

The Phaser Relay is a Tactical Console that adds a bonus to your starship phaser weapon damage. It affects phaser cannons, beams, and turrets.

I'd at least swap out the Energy type console and Cannon type weapon console you mentioned above for the Phaser Relay (perhaps Phaser Relay is already what you mean by 'energy type console') as the percentage of increased damage will be higher.

Since your main weapons are phasers (4 of them) I would be tempted to use all 5 Tac Consoles as Phaser Relays, as your damage will be off the charts when you are firing forward!

Chris

I tend to agree with this. When I got over my propaganda-induced fear of the Kumari I quickly noticed that it's DHC\wing cannon damage alone, when backed by 5 phaser relay's, can be spectacular. I frankly don't miss having a torp on the bow.

1xWing Cannon
4xFleet phaser Andorian DHC's, 2 DMGx3 ACCx1, 2 DMGx2 ACCx2
Stern
2 Andorian Fleet Beam Arrays, DMGx2 ACCx2
Thanks for the comparison Chaucer!!! I recently acquired the Fleet variant of the Defiant and I must say, I love it!!!! One thing I never thought of, Beams in the back!!!! I went with 3 turrets and front, 4 DHCs. You think putting 3 beam aft would make a bigger difference in damage??? I'll give it a shot with some commons, if I like I'll spend the stuff on Fleet's.
The problem with beams and DHC is the arcs do not overlap at all. Personally I would rather have lesser dps in the rear slots that can fire into my main arc then have higher dps that doesnt fire all the time or that I have to turn off my main damage source to use.

Thank you sir!!! Appreciate the feedback... I'll stick with Turrets Smile
when running DHCs, tis turrets aft for me
On a note Hijaak if you are running DC or just cannons iirc they have a wider range so the beam arrays may overlap if you fire at a slightly off angle. I only use DHC and Turrets so not as familiar with the others anymore.
Beam arrays are normally 260 degree arc - so a 180 degree cannon would overlap, but you'd have a 90 degree window in which to get both going.
