Oh dear.

This is wonderful. Instead of a broken game, I get no game at all!
In one way I'm happy that Cryptic has finally given the mac client some serious thought for once, and taken definitive action, but Im serious angry over the fact that having been through so much turbulence on the Mac client, that they just gave up with it. Well done Cryptic.
Well I'll need to break out the Wine "Backup"-now permanent solution and see how that goes.
I'm at a loss of words, except that I'm deeply sorry for the inconvenience this brings to all Mac users.
Its understandable that Cryptic/PWE are shutting it down, because it was terrible to begin with, and was so buggy that it taken more dev money and time that it was worth. From that angle not surprised, as well as the fact that this is the final slap to the face for a throughly mistreated client and group of customers.
Let's hope that Cryptic learns its lesson from this and start to care more about testing stuff before they release it.
I'm done with this game. What a waste.

Does the wine thing give you the same functionality in the game?
small update:
some users in the official forums are VERY angry now.
They promised the MAC users to give them back the ZEN they invested since the 1st of October. They won't refund anything to credit cards except subscription fees. But every Mac user will receive a refund to the arc account balance. Okay so far. Not good or nice or generous, but okay.
But now they started to sort things out a bit. It seems that most of the users WON'T even get the refunds to the account balance. In the last year there was a major issue with the mac client where no mac user was able to be online with the mac client for at least three weeks. Most of the mac users started to use a wine workaround, which wasn't stable (crashed every few minutes) but at least they were able to start a few doff assignments during this period of three weeks.
Now Perfect World says that all mac users who used that workaround are not eligible for the refund because they already had a different solution to be online and weren't in need of the mac client anymore. They don't care that the game wasn't really playable with that solution. And they don't care that in all official statements they promised that ALL mac users will receive a refund to the arc account balance.
They made a promise due to the fact that they won't invest time and manpower in the mac client anymore to the users. Now they say "we don't give a *#&!% about what we promised you yesterday".
This is bad - really bad!
Fun fact:
If they will do it like this it would mean that ONLY mac users who aren't able to use ANY of the Arc Games will receive a refund - because there is no arc game anymore with an official mac client. So nobody can spend what they give away as a refund.
Fun fact II:
During the big crash for mac users last year in late summer they gave away a promotion (i think it was specialization points? can't remember) to all mac users. so they send a mail saying "because we are sorry for the inconvenience of the mac client, we give all mac users promotion xy". So in their official statements everybody who received this extra gimmick is a mac client. But NOW - as it might be a little expensive for them - they don't care who they defined as a mac client user anymore. They try to find an excuse for not giving away what they promised.
I don't know yet how it will be for me. Although I had a few mails with the support where they confirmed that I will receive a refund to my account balance I now asked the support again. They came back to me with some questions and now I'm waiting for an answer. Will keep you posted.
update:
they say I won't get my money back. Not to my credit card and not even to the arc account balance.
No refunds at all although i am a mac user only. They lied to me several times and they confirmed to me several times that they will make a refund. Today they say they won't. This is fraud (due to some very concrete statements i received from the support before) and I will do something against it on a civil and on a penal law base.
You might say that I should come down, but I started this game with an existing mac client and spent more than 2000 euro in total the whole time. You might say this is a lot and yes, you are right, but I live in Switzerland and can afford it. Nevertheless it is good money and I won't let them f*#& around with me on that.
just to let you know: this might lead to a closed account soon. I don't think they will still let me play.
I don't know what will happen in the community because right now this happens to nearly all mac players. Maybe a pressure from the community might lead to a change on that course at perfect world. But I don't believe that there is something like solidarity in gaming communities, so I will play as long as I can and will leave a goodbye here soon.
Woah Woah, calm down for a minute, are so actually suggesting taking legal action against PWE? Jens, I understand your frustration, we all are angry and hurt by this and I understand that you spent a lot of money on STO.
However that being said there are plenty of other ways to get in game, I'm using PlayonMac, which works fine to my standards.
https://www.playonmac.com/en/ You can still enjoy and play the game, there is no need to take legal action over this.
Besides i can see there reasoning behind it, people like you an me who used a backup system found another way to run the game, therefore they aren't permanently affected by the shutdown and so don't require reimbursements like the people who did not find another way to get in game.
Honestly there is no need to try to fight PWE of this one, you can get in game still but by unofficial means.
I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go down that route, but here is a well know video games lawyer who officers his services on reddit pro bono sometimes. (he was going to sure FInebros over the react trademark dispute)
