Full Version: My skills. Help me respec?

Hi!

I just reached RA, LH. I'm a science captain (so far, a terrible one) who's flown principally science vessels. But I'm really bad. Someone invited me to his bridge, got rid of my gear, told me to buy a Star Cruiser, trained my BOffs, and told me to outfit my cruiser with nothing but Tetryon beams and dual beam banks (no torpedoes or mines, EVER! But I still like Transphasic mines/torps, for it's easier for me just to keep hitting fire, and I know they do the most damage to shields.)

Why Tetryon? Well, he pressed me, I had to think quickly, and had already had been using some Tetryon weapons, so I thought I'd continue. He then gave me a bunch of Rare beams and banks, told me to constantly hit EPtE, EpTS, FAW, and Hazard Emitters, Science team, engineering team, polarize hull, etc. And set my power to 100/25/25/50 (which, with the constant button mashing is more like 140, 70, 70, 60).

I had tried to build my char for science ships, but I died so often I thought a cruiser might be a good idea, so I agreed to try. I now need to respec. My current SP are below:

http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=KailathSP_426

For ground combat, he has me with a rare medic kit and four engineers with phaser turrets 1, 2, and 3, and shield recharge, as well as sniper rifles. He said I should now be able to actually do ok. I've not yet respecced, so obviously I'm not set up properly. He said something about putting skills into engine performance. If it works, I'd be very happy, for I could fly my old cruisers for fun and solo ground combat wouldn't be so hard. But I have no idea how to set up a build for this loadout.

I'm certainly not used to the super-slow cruiser, but I like the idea of not being totally useless! And before I respecced, I trained up in some science skills, so I can train anyone's BOffs in Tricorder Scan, Medical Tricorder, Gravimetric Shift, and Scramble Sensors 3. Just let me know before I respec!

I hope I can get feedback/opinions from someone, at least Admiral Attilio. Yes, I've read countless guides, read and reread the official fora, but thus far I've had terrible luck. (He did say the 13 BOffs I had and 12 BOff candidates I had, even the ones with superior stuff, including the Saurians and my special Borg one were no good. He said there's still hope I'll get good ones when I rank up to VA (if that ever happens!)

So, could anyone critique my build, look at my current SP, and if time permits, either make a new one for me to examine and implement or at least give me written tips?

For ground, I wouldn't mind playing the medic in team stuff, for healing is cool and I have an AMAZING kit.

I still like science and may want to try the Nebula retrofit, for it seems to combine the best of both. I am sad I can't use Scramble Sensors anymore! hehe

Thanks!
Sorry to bug ppl about this, but b/c respeccing is such a huge commitment, and I'm not yet totally sold on what I've been told is the only way I should/can play (too dumb for science, too bad at gaming for escorts), I must take the Star Cruiser — and ONLY the SC (no Nebula, Galaxy, or Excelsior retrofit, that is, if I want to actually be useful, win, etc.), the guy gave me the SP I must choose, available here, courtesy of the Admiral's great tool: http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillpla...kailath1_0.

I'm supposed to just keep hitting EPtE, EPtS, FAW, Haz Emitters, Polarize Hull, and if on a team, attract the enemies and heal myself and others as needed.

He said I *should* get Reverse Shield Polarity 3 but can only buy it on the xcbange. He also suggested I'd be better off selling my rare traces etc. and buy an Ægis Set.

He seems to do quite well with these techniques, so maybe I ought to go for it. Just wanted to solicit opinions here, too! Wink
One thing I've noticed about this game is that there are hundreds of ways to do things. First of all there are two aspects to this game, PvE and PvP. PvE is easier and you can always win with almost any build. PvP is harder since you are going against other players. This means that you'll need to invest more time into building your character.

The build he gave you looks very nice. The one you had (in your first post) was all over the place and not focused at all. I recommend using what he gave you and in the future we could always tweak it if necessary.

"All over place", "not focused", that describes everything about the way I'd been playing. But now I did respec as he suggested, got my BOffs trained, and he's taken me on a few "test drives" to ensure I'm doing things correctly. I cannot believe how much easier and more fun PvE is!

The thing is, I want to be helpful in any team things we do (PvP, STFs, etc.). I have a terrific super rare medic kit and maxed out debuff skills (Tricorder Scan, Gravimetric Shift, Stasis Field), so I hope I could be useful — I could try to get my hands on a good Geophysicist or Analyst kit if you tactical chars want more exposes. Or physician if you want the buffing and debuffing-removal.)

In space, I need Zupancic to train one of my engineers to have Extend Shields III (I think), and along with my science heals and EptS, could easily be the designated tank and draw fire, mashing FAW I/II while those with Escorts (and their cannons) zip around, and those with science vessels mess with the enemy. I can then heal myself and allies. Plus photonic fleet, sensor scan, and subnucleonic beam are pretty nice to have (though it's hard for me to tell when to use SB to remove an enemy's buffs).

I only wish the Star Cruiser was a canonical ship. Sad At least I put my TOS bridge on it (and might switch to TNG-movie wear + bridge for it during the sale).

Still, you think the SC is the way to go, and no Nebula or Excelsior Retrofits? It'd save me money, but I like those ships (I *do* have the lower Tier ones and all the other canonical ships I'd wanted, so I can at least take them out for joyrides and collect particle traces for the Fleet. 8-) Going in a Defiant is certainly easier to collect them then in this monstrous hulk of a Star Cruiser!)

PS
I only used my first retrain token, so I have plenty of them in case it doesn't work out or the Fleet wants someone in an Escort or Science ship. (Though Escorts seem the hardest: I know they can unload a lot of damage in a hit-and-run, but I find it hard to move slowly enough to keep enemies in front of my cannons! One reason why playing with a BoP seems quite difficult. If I ever did a Klingon, I'd — well, first make him look like a Cardassian probably — try to get a Battle Cruiser. I have no idea what a Raptor is like/its equivalent for Feds.)

Thanks for the advice!
You can use any ship you want. It really doesn't matter. If you choose another ship you will need to respec again. I use the Excelsior on my tactical officer and its a pretty good ship. It even comes with transwarp skills to many of the sectors. By the way, if you ever run out of respec tokens you can use merits as well.

I'm not going to tell you which ship to use because the fleet wants you in it. You aren't going to be doing every event so forcing you to use a certain ship won't make sense. I don't participate in every event either.

You'll be fine in whatever ship you choose.
Kailath let me know what a good time would be to meet you in game. I'm going to be working late in the evening so I'll try to get on during the day sometime to see if you are on. I usually saw you playing during the day I thought, so I'll try to be on early today, the 24th of May. Hopefully we'll see each other.

Thanks, Zupancic!

The only times I can be on are between ca. 13:00 and 18:00 UTC (if I did my math correctly, that's 6am PDT/9am EDT and 1pm PDT/4pm EDT, assuming you're from the USA — the daily savings shift always confuses me when it comes to UTC vs GMT :?!) And I often have interruptions b/c of health reasons.

Well, I've committed myself to the Star Cruiser for now, and now that I've respecced, I do seem to actually enjoy space combat. But I'd like to buy the Nebula and Excelsior for their canonical fun. The Nebula would allow me to use fun science abilities, and I'd already be trained up for the Excelsior (mainly -- except for the Star Cruiser captain skill), so I'd have a chance. I'd like to get them during the sale to unlock them for my alts (which I hope one day to have, one in each career). But thanks for the encouragement. I *am* going to get some uniform slots and have fun changing outfits. I'd like to have enough ground BOffs (only need three engineers) outfitted with the same uniforms, so I could land with a "theme". Wink

I hope we get someone who can train shield recharge III and phaser turret III. I really want the latter for my engineers.

About the BOff thread: I can start it, but it's going to be a lot of work copying all that down! :|

Cheers!
My engineer might be able to train shield recharge III or phaser turret III, I really don't know though. I'll have to look and get back to you.
